What is Postbiotic?

In 2019, the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) defines postbiotic as “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host”. The concept of postbiotic is getting more popular among scientific communities and on commercial products (Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2021)

Discovery of novel probiotic strains

Our scientist team spent hundreds of hours to screen through 100+ fermented foods and run series of experiments to isolate, culture and identify unique probiotic strains that exhibits promising properties. Among many, we have isolated unique strains, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K014™ from fermented cabbage and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei FD1 from fermented Musang King durian.

Next generation of probiotics - Postbiotics

Maintaining the stability and cell viability of probiotics in a product has always been a great technological challenge because living cells are sensitive to heat, which in turn affects the efficacy. To overcome this problem, we innovate the fermentation process to stimulate the probiotics to produce the desired metabolites outside human guts and  harvest these metabolites and inanimate probiotic cells, which are collectively known as postbiotics.

Potential solution to antimicrobial resistance

Our studies have found that the postbiotics from our proprietary probiotic strains showed remarkable antimicrobial properties against multiple pathogens, for example Staphylococcus spp.E.coli, Candida sp., P.acnesSalmonella spp., klebsiella sp. etc. Our L. paracasei postbiotic is found to be able to "re-activate" the ability of  the previously ineffective antibiotics to kill the multi-drug resistant bacteria, such as ESBL-producing E.coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Founded in 2020 by a fermentation scientist and a research pharmacist, Biotenova is a young and dynamic biologic raw ingredient innovator and manufacturer for human wellness. The roots of our company trace back to 2018 when our team recognised the immense public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance. We sought to harness the power of nature as a solution, igniting our journey to screen hundreds of natural sources to look for novel probiotic strains that have highly effective antimicrobial properties against multidrug resistant pathogens. It was during this exploration that we discovered our proprietary lactobacillus strain and extracted our first postbiotic - Lassica K014™.

Postbiotics - Patented Microbial Ingredients

Postbiotic Lassica K014™ is extraced from our proprietary probiotic strain called Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K014™ (L. plantarum K014™) isolated from sauerkraut. It is a versatile functional ingredient for foods, health supplement and cosmetic products. It can effectively kill opportunistic microorganisms in our guts and skins, including

  • Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), that causes food poisoning or skin disorders such as eczema flare-up, cellulitis, abscesses;

  • Escherichia coli, that causes diarrhoea due to contaminated food and water;

  • Salmonella typhimurium, that causes gastroenteritis;

  • Candida albicans, that causes oral thrush, vaginal yeast infection, diaper rash; and

  • Propionibacterium acnes, that causes acne vulgaris.

Plantact™ is an animal-grade bioactive postbiotic ingredient. Our animal study shows that Plantact™ can effectively inhibit the colonisation of pathogenic bacteria in the animals' gut and promote the growth of the beneficial microbes. Besides, our field trial shows that the administration of Plantact™ can improve the weight performance of broilers. It is observed that the egg production and egg protein quality are also improved in layers.

The unique advantage of postbiotic Plantact™ makes it an ideal ingredient to complement pet foods or animal feed or be formulated into pet supplements and animal additives to improve the animals' gut health and immune health.
